Neve FSE - Settings Reference

Neve FSE is a modern, minimalist WordPress Full-Site Editing block theme designed for blogs, small businesses, portfolios, and e-commerce shops. All settings are managed through the WordPress Site Editor (Appearance > Editor), where you can customize Global Styles, swap templates and template parts, insert block patterns, and configure navigation.

Site Editor — Global Styles

Global Styles control the overall look and feel of the site. Open them by clicking the half-filled circle icon in the top-right of the Site Editor. Changes made here apply site-wide unless overridden at the block level.

Colors

The theme provides a seven-color palette that determines the appearance of nearly every element on the site.

  • Background — The main background color of the site. Changing this affects the default canvas behind all content. The default is white.
  • Foreground — The primary text color used for body copy, headings, and links by default. The default is near-black.
  • Accent — The primary brand color used for buttons, interactive elements, and highlighted text. The default is a medium blue.
  • Accent Secondary — A companion to the accent color, used for hover states and secondary emphasis. The default is a slightly darker blue.
  • Background Dark — An inverted background color used in sections designed to stand out, such as call-to-action areas and some footer variations. The default is very dark gray.
  • Background Alt — An alternate light background used to visually separate sections from the main background, for instance alternating content rows. The default is a warm off-white.
  • Foreground Alt — A light text color intended for use on dark backgrounds, ensuring readability in inverted-color sections. The default is near-white.

You can change any of these colors individually. Custom gradients are not provided by the theme but you can create your own through the editor. Link colors default to the Foreground color and can be overridden in the Colors panel.

Typography

Fonts

The theme bundles eleven font families, all served locally (no external requests). The default font for both body text and headings is Inter. The available font families are:

  • Inter — A clean, neutral sans-serif. The theme default for body and headings.
  • Albert Sans — A geometric sans-serif with a modern, rounded feel. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Fraunces — A soft serif with an old-style character, good for editorial or literary sites. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Hanken Grotesk — A neo-grotesque sans-serif with wide letter-spacing. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Outfit — A geometric sans-serif with uniform strokes, conveying clarity and simplicity.
  • Spline Sans — A sans-serif optimized for screen readability with subtle curves.
  • Playfair Display — A high-contrast transitional serif, suited for elegant headings. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Source Sans Pro — A classic Adobe sans-serif in regular, italic, bold, and bold-italic weights.
  • Montserrat — A geometric sans-serif inspired by urban signage, popular for modern designs. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Open Sans — A humanist sans-serif known for excellent readability at all sizes. Supports normal and italic styles.
  • Figtree — A friendly, geometric sans-serif with a contemporary feel. Supports normal and italic styles.

You can assign different fonts to body text and headings through the Typography section of Global Styles. Most of these fonts are variable-weight (300–900), so you can fine-tune boldness without being limited to preset weights.

Font Sizes

The theme defines six fluid font sizes that scale smoothly between a minimum and maximum value based on screen width. You can select any of these when styling text:

  • Small — Suitable for captions, metadata, and fine print (approximately 12–14 px).
  • Normal — The default body text size (approximately 16–18 px).
  • Medium — Used for subheadings and emphasized text (approximately 20–24 px).
  • Large — Used for section headings and H3 elements by default (approximately 24–28 px).
  • Extra Large — Used for prominent headings and H2 elements by default (approximately 28–40 px).
  • Huge — The largest preset, used for H1 elements and hero text by default (approximately 36–56 px).

You can also enter a custom font size for any block. Fluid typography is enabled, so all sizes adjust gracefully between mobile and desktop viewports.

Line Height

Line height controls are enabled. The theme defaults are:

  • Body text: 1.7
  • Headings (general): 1.3
  • H1: 1.25, H2: 1.35, H3: 1.35, H4: 1.4, H5: 1.55, H6: 1.6

You can adjust line height on any text block through the Typography panel.

Heading Defaults

Each heading level (H1 through H6) has a default font size, weight, and line height. By default all headings use weight 600 (semi-bold) and the Inter font family. You can change these per heading level in Global Styles under Elements > Headings, or override them on individual blocks.

Layout

  • Content Width — The maximum width for standard content blocks. The default is 740 px. Blocks set to the default alignment will not exceed this width.
  • Wide Width — The maximum width for blocks using the "wide" alignment. The default is 1140 px. Full-width blocks ignore this and stretch to the viewport edge.

These values affect every template. You can override them on individual blocks using the alignment and dimensions controls.

Spacing

Block gap, margin, and padding controls are all enabled. You can use px, em, rem, vh, vw, and % units. The theme defines a spacing scale based on a 16 px baseline that produces consistent vertical and horizontal rhythm across sections, but you can enter any custom value.

Borders

Full border controls are enabled, including color, radius, style (solid, dashed, dotted, etc.), and width. These can be applied to any block that supports border settings.

Appearance Tools

The theme enables all WordPress appearance tools, which means you can control dimensions (min-height, aspect ratio), position (sticky, fixed), overflow, and other advanced layout properties on supported blocks.

Per-Block Style Overrides

Global Styles lets you set default styles for individual block types. The theme ships with custom defaults for the following blocks. You can change any of these in Global Styles under Blocks:

Button

Buttons use the Accent color as their background, Foreground Alt as their text color, and a 2 px solid Accent-colored border with a 5 px radius. Padding is 16 px top/bottom and 40 px left/right. Font size is Normal and weight is 600. Changing the Accent color in the palette automatically updates all default buttons.

Site Title

Displays at the Medium font size with weight 600. The link has no underline decoration.

The default logo width is 48 px. You can change this in the block settings or in Global Styles.

Navigation links have no underline decoration by default, keeping the header clean. You can add underlines or other text decoration through Global Styles or on individual Navigation blocks.

Post title links have no underline decoration, giving archive and listing pages a cleaner look.

Site Editor — Style Variations

Style variations let you change the entire look of the site with a single click. Open Global Styles and click "Browse styles" to see all available variations. Each variation changes the color palette, fonts, or both. The theme includes seven variations in addition to the default style:

Crayola

Changes the accent color to a warm golden yellow. Keeps Inter as the font for both body text and headings. The overall feel shifts from cool blue to warm and energetic, suitable for creative or lifestyle sites.

Majorelle Blue

Introduces a vibrant blue-purple accent color and switches both body and heading fonts to Albert Sans. The palette has a subtle purple tint in the dark background and alt background colors, giving the site a modern, creative feel.

Zomp

Uses a teal-green accent on a warm cream background. Headings switch to Fraunces (a soft serif) and body text switches to Hanken Grotesk, creating a sophisticated editorial pairing. The overall mood is calm, natural, and refined.

Dark Pastel Red

Features a burnt-orange accent on a soft off-white background. Headings use Outfit and body text uses Spline Sans, both geometric sans-serifs. Heading weights lighten to 500, giving the typography an airy, contemporary feel. Well-suited for design studios or architecture firms.

Aztec Gold

A dark-mode variation with a nearly black background, white text, and a muted gold accent. Headings use Playfair Display (a high-contrast serif) at heavier weights (800 for H1–H3), while body text uses Source Sans Pro. The result is luxurious and formal, ideal for premium brands, restaurants, or portfolios.

Vivid Red-Tangelo

A dark-mode variation with a deep teal background and a vivid orange accent. Headings use Montserrat at weight 700 and body text uses Open Sans. The high-contrast color scheme is bold and attention-grabbing, suited for agencies, startups, or event sites.

Greenlight

Uses a natural sage-green accent on a white background with a warm beige alt-background. Both body and headings use Figtree, a friendly sans-serif. H1–H3 are set to weight 700 for extra emphasis. The look is fresh and organic, well-suited for sustainability, wellness, or nature-focused sites.

Site Editor — Templates

Templates control the overall layout of different page types. You can view, edit, duplicate, and create new templates in the Site Editor under Templates. Edits to a template are saved as customizations; you can reset any template to the theme default at any time without losing content.

Index

The default blog listing template. Displays a "Our Blog" heading followed by a two-column grid of post cards showing the featured image, date, title, and excerpt. Shows six posts per page with numbered pagination. If no posts are found, a message and search block are shown. A search call-to-action section with inverted colors appears at the bottom.

Front Page

The homepage template. Includes a hero cover section with call-to-action buttons, followed by multiple content sections built from theme patterns: icon columns, image-text layouts, testimonials, portfolio grid, and a closing CTA. You can freely replace any section with other blocks or patterns.

Single

The single post template. Displays the post title with date and category metadata, followed by the featured image and post content. A full comments section appears below the content, including threaded replies, comment pagination, and the comment form.

Page

The standard page template. Shows the page title centered above the content area. Suitable for general-purpose pages like About or Contact.

Archive

Used for category, tag, author, and date archive pages. Displays the archive title and description, then a three-column grid of posts showing featured images, dates, and titles. Includes pagination and a no-results fallback with a search block.

Search

Displays search results in a three-column grid with featured images, dates, and titles. Includes pagination and a fallback section inviting users to try another search if no results are found.

404

Shown when a page is not found. A full-height cover block with inverted colors displays a large "404 - Page not Found" heading, a brief message, and a button linking back to the homepage.

Blank

A minimal template with no header, footer, or surrounding structure. Contains only the content area. Use this when you need a completely custom landing page or a page embedded in another system.

Plain

Includes the header and footer but nothing else around the content area — no title, no metadata, no sidebar. Use this for pages where you want to build the entire content layout from scratch using blocks but still want the standard site header and footer.

Site Editor — Template Parts

Template parts are reusable sections shared across templates. The theme provides multiple header and footer variations. You can switch which variation a template uses by editing the template and replacing the template part block, or you can edit the parts themselves directly.

Header (Default)

A horizontal layout with the site logo and title on the left, a navigation menu in the center, and social media icon links (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) on the right. The navigation includes Home, Patterns, Blog, and Contact links by default.

Header Variation — Centered

The site logo and title appear on the left with the navigation menu aligned to the right. The overall layout is centered and straightforward, without social icons. A good choice for minimal designs.

Header Variation — Button

Includes the site title in uppercase on the left, the navigation menu in the center-right area, and a "Call Us" call-to-action button on the far right. Use this when you want a prominent action button in the header.

Header Variation — Hamburger Menu

The site logo is centered with the navigation menu below it. The layout is vertically stacked and centered, producing a compact, mobile-friendly appearance. Ideal for image-heavy or portfolio sites where you want the header to take minimal horizontal space.

A three-column layout with a welcome message, an about blurb, and a connect section. Below the columns, a copyright line and social media links (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) appear on a dark background.

A minimal footer with centered copyright text and three social media links on a dark background. Use this for a clean, uncluttered page bottom.

A compact footer with copyright text and the site logo centered at the top, and navigation links (Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions) below in a horizontal layout.

A content-rich footer with four columns: a welcome blurb, Company links, Industries links, and Support links. A bottom bar includes the site logo, copyright, and policy links on a dark background. Suited for business or corporate sites with many pages.

The most comprehensive footer, with five navigation columns (Company, Industries, Site Menu, Useful Links, Support), a horizontal separator, and a bottom section with copyright text and social media links. Best for large sites with extensive content hierarchies.

Site Editor — Patterns

Patterns are pre-designed block layouts you can insert into any page or template. In the editor, click the block inserter (+) and switch to the Patterns tab to find them. The theme registers patterns in two categories.

Neve FSE Layouts

Full-page layout patterns intended for use as starting points when building new pages or replacing entire template contents:

  • Post Loop Patterns (9 variations) — Different arrangements for displaying a list of posts. Variations include grids, lists, and card-based layouts with different combinations of featured images, titles, dates, excerpts, and metadata. Use these when customizing the blog or archive template to change how post listings appear.
  • Page Title Patterns (5 variations) — Different designs for the page title area at the top of a page. Variations range from simple centered titles to more elaborate layouts with background colors or images. Use these to give individual pages a distinctive header.
  • Single Post Cover — Boxed — A single-post layout with the featured image as a boxed cover element. Designed as a replacement for the default single post template.
  • Single Post Cover — A single-post layout with a full-width featured-image cover. Creates a more immersive reading experience.
  • Archive Cover — An archive page layout with a cover-style header section. Replaces the default archive template header.
  • Archive List — An archive page layout that displays posts in a list rather than a grid. Provides a more traditional blog feel.

Site Editor — Navigation

Menus in Neve FSE are managed as Navigation blocks within the Site Editor, not through the classic Appearance > Menus screen. The theme's header template parts each contain a Navigation block pre-populated with links to Home, Patterns, Blog, and Contact.

To edit the navigation, open the Site Editor, click on the header area, and select the Navigation block. From there you can add, remove, reorder, or nest menu items. You can also create multiple Navigation blocks and assign different menus to different header variations.

The default header variation also includes a Social Links block with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter icon links. You can edit these to point to your own profiles or remove them entirely.

When the theme is first activated with starter content enabled, it creates a primary navigation menu with Home and Blog links and sets up a static homepage and a blog page.

Otter Blocks Integration

This section applies only when the Otter Blocks plugin is installed and active.

When Otter Blocks is active, the theme unlocks an onboarding experience with additional ready-made page templates. These templates are available through the Otter onboarding flow and provide complete page designs for common use cases:

If Otter Blocks is not installed, the theme displays a notice in the WordPress dashboard recommending its installation to access these templates.
