Fork - Settings Reference

Fork is a clean, minimal WordPress Full-Site Editing block theme suited for blogs, small businesses, startups, portfolios, and e-commerce shops. All settings are managed through the WordPress Site Editor (Appearance > Editor), where you can customize Global Styles, swap templates, insert block patterns, and configure navigation.

Site Editor — Global Styles

Global Styles control the overall look and feel of the site. Open them by clicking the half-filled circle icon in the top-right of the Site Editor. Changes made here apply site-wide unless overridden at the block level.

Colors

The theme provides a six-color palette that determines the appearance of nearly every element on the site.

  • Background — The main background color of the site. Changing this affects the default canvas behind all content. The default is white (#FFFFFF).
  • Foreground — The primary text color used for body copy, headings, and links by default. The default is near-black (#202020).
  • Background Alt — An alternate background color used to visually separate sections from the main background, for instance alternating content rows or card surfaces. The default is a warm cream (#EDEAE4).
  • Background Dark — An inverted background color used in sections designed to stand out, such as call-to-action areas, the footer, and dark-mode sections. The default is very dark gray (#1A1919).
  • Foreground Alt — A light text color intended for use on dark backgrounds, ensuring readability in inverted-color sections. The default is near-white (#FBFBFB).
  • Accent — The primary brand color used for buttons, interactive elements, and highlighted text. The default is a medium blue (#435DEB).

You can change any of these colors individually. Custom gradients are not provided by the theme but you can create your own through the editor. Link colors default to the Foreground color and can be overridden in the Colors panel.

Typography

Fonts

The theme bundles five font families, all served locally (no external requests). The default font for body text and headings is Figtree. The available font families are:

  • Readex Pro — A modern sans-serif with wide letter spacing, designed for clarity. Variable weight from 160 to 700.
  • Source Serif Pro — A classic transitional serif from Adobe, well-suited for editorial and long-form content. Supports normal and italic styles with variable weight from 200 to 900.
  • Figtree — A friendly, geometric sans-serif with a contemporary feel. The theme default. Supports normal and italic styles with variable weight from 300 to 900.
  • Outfit — A geometric sans-serif with uniform strokes, conveying clarity and simplicity. Variable weight from 100 to 900.
  • Lora — A well-balanced serif with moderate contrast, ideal for body text with a calligraphic touch. Supports normal and italic styles with variable weight from 400 to 700.

You can assign different fonts to body text and headings through the Typography section of Global Styles.

Font Sizes

The theme defines six fixed font sizes. Unlike fluid sizes that scale with the viewport, these remain constant across screen widths:

  • Small — 14 px. Suitable for captions, metadata, and fine print.
  • Normal — 18 px. The default body text size.
  • Medium — 24 px. Used for subheadings and emphasized text.
  • Large — 28 px. Used for section headings and H3 elements by default.
  • Extra Large — 40 px. Used for prominent headings and H2 elements by default.
  • Huge — 72 px. The largest preset, used for H1 elements and hero text by default.

You can also enter a custom font size for any block.

Line Height

Line height controls are enabled. The theme defaults are:

  • Body text: 1.7
  • H1: 1.25, H2: 1.35, H3: 1.35, H4: 1.4, H5: 1.55, H6: 1.6

You can adjust line height on any text block through the Typography panel.

Heading Defaults

Each heading level (H1 through H6) has a default font size and weight. All headings default to weight 500 (medium) and inherit the Figtree font family from the body. This lighter heading weight gives the theme its characteristic clean, minimal look. You can change these per heading level in Global Styles under Elements > Headings, or override them on individual blocks.

Layout

  • Content Width — The maximum width for standard content blocks. The default is 740 px. Blocks set to the default alignment will not exceed this width.
  • Wide Width — The maximum width for blocks using the "wide" alignment. The default is 1140 px. Full-width blocks ignore this and stretch to the viewport edge.

These values affect every template. You can override them on individual blocks using the alignment and dimensions controls.

Spacing

Block gap, margin, and padding controls are all enabled. You can use px, em, rem, vh, vw, and % units. The theme defines a spacing scale based on a 16 px baseline that produces consistent vertical and horizontal rhythm across sections, but you can enter any custom value.

Borders

Full border controls are enabled, including color, radius, style (solid, dashed, dotted, etc.), and width. These can be applied to any block that supports border settings.

Appearance Tools

The theme enables all WordPress appearance tools, which means you can control dimensions (min-height, aspect ratio), position (sticky, fixed), overflow, and other advanced layout properties on supported blocks.

Per-Block Style Overrides

Global Styles lets you set default styles for individual block types. The theme ships with custom defaults for the following blocks. You can change any of these in Global Styles under Blocks:

Button

Buttons use the Accent color as their background, Foreground Alt as their text color, and a fully rounded border (pill shape with 999 px radius). Padding is 16 px top/bottom and 40 px left/right. Font size is Normal and weight is 600. The pill shape is a distinctive design element of the theme; you can reduce the border radius in Global Styles for a more conventional rectangular button.

Site Title

Displays at the Medium font size with weight 600. The link has no underline decoration.

Navigation links have no underline decoration by default, keeping the header clean. You can add underlines or other text decoration through Global Styles or on individual Navigation blocks.

Post Title

Post title links have no underline decoration, giving archive and listing pages a cleaner look.

Post Terms

Term links (categories, tags) have no underline decoration by default.

Post Excerpt

Excerpt links have no underline decoration by default.

Quote

Block quotes use the Large font size by default.

The search input has a 5 px border radius.

Comment Content

Comment bodies have a 5 px border radius, the site Background color, and 24 px padding on all sides.

Comment Author Name

Displays at the Normal font size. The author link has no underline.

Comment Date

Displays in uppercase at 14 px. The date link has no underline.

Displays in uppercase at 14 px with no underline.

Displays in uppercase with no underline. The link uses the Accent color and the Small font size.

Site Editor — Style Variations

Style variations let you change the entire look of the site with a single click. Open Global Styles and click "Browse styles" to see all available variations. Each variation changes the color palette and may change the body font. The theme includes five variations in addition to the default style:

Spice Cream

Switches to a warm cream background with a vivid orange accent color. The body font changes to Outfit, giving text a more geometric, structured feel. The overall mood is warm and inviting, well-suited for food blogs, creative studios, or lifestyle brands.

Violet-dense

A dark-mode variation with a dark gray background, white text, and a soft purple accent color. Keeps the default Figtree font. The semi-transparent Background Alt creates subtle layering effects in alternating sections. Ideal for creative portfolios, music sites, or modern agencies.

Electro Blue

A dark-mode variation with a deep navy background and a cool teal-blue accent. Keeps the default Figtree font. The dark palette with blue tones creates a tech-forward, professional atmosphere suited for SaaS products, tech startups, or digital agencies.

Light Organic

A light-mode variation with a white background and a natural sage-green accent. The body font switches to Lora, a serif typeface, giving the site a warmer, more editorial character. The dark green Background Dark creates a natural, earthy feel in inverted sections. Well-suited for sustainability brands, wellness businesses, or literary blogs.

Paper Purple

A warm variation with a cream background and a rich purple accent. Keeps the default Figtree font. The dark purple Background Dark provides strong contrast in inverted sections. The combination of warm neutrals and purple creates a sophisticated, creative atmosphere suited for design studios, boutiques, or artistic portfolios.

Site Editor — Templates

Templates control the overall layout of different page types. You can view, edit, duplicate, and create new templates in the Site Editor under Templates. Edits to a template are saved as customizations; you can reset any template to the theme default at any time without losing content.

Index

The default blog listing template. Displays posts in a two-column flex grid, with each post card showing the featured image (300 px height), date, title (Extra Large size), and excerpt with a "Read more" link. Shows six posts per page with numbered pagination. If no posts are found, a fallback message appears. A search section with inverted colors sits at the bottom of the page.

Front Page

The homepage template. Opens with the Front Page Hero pattern (a large heading, subtitle, two buttons, and a wide image), followed by the Columns with Icons pattern, a content area for the page's own blocks, and the Content with Image and Button pattern at the bottom. You can freely replace any of these sections with other blocks or patterns.

Single

The single post template. Displays the post title as an H1, followed by the date and categories in a horizontal row, then the featured image in wide alignment and the post content. A full comments section appears below on an alternate-colored background, including threaded replies with avatars, comment pagination, and the comment form.

Page

The standard page template. Shows the page title as a centered H1 with generous top padding, followed by the content area below. Suitable for general-purpose pages like About or Contact.

Archive

Used for category, tag, author, and date archive pages. Displays the archive title (without a prefix label), then a list of posts in a two-column layout showing the date and title separated by dividers. Includes pagination and a no-results fallback. A search section with inverted colors appears at the bottom.

Search

Displays search results in a two-column layout with dates and titles separated by dividers. Includes pagination and a fallback section with a "Try another search" heading and a search block.

404

Shown when a page is not found. A full-height cover block displays a large "404 - Page not Found" heading, a brief explanation, and a button linking back to the homepage.

Blank

A minimal template with no header, footer, or surrounding structure. Contains only the content area. Use this when you need a completely custom landing page or a page embedded in another system.

Site Editor — Template Parts

Template parts are reusable sections shared across templates. The theme provides one header and one footer. You can edit these directly in the Site Editor or create additional variations.

A single-row horizontal layout with the site title (uppercase) on the left and a navigation menu on the right. The navigation includes links to Home, Patterns, Blog, and Contact, followed by social media icon links (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) in a logos-only style. A thin 2 px border separates the header from the content below.

A compact footer with inverted colors (dark background, light text). Contains social media icon links (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) in a logos-only style, followed by a centered copyright line in the Small font size.

Site Editor — Patterns

Patterns are pre-designed block layouts you can insert into any page or template. In the editor, click the block inserter (+) and switch to the Patterns tab to find them. All patterns are registered under the "Fork Patterns" category.

Hero and Cover Sections

  • Front Page Hero — A large heading ("Fork is a clean & minimal theme"), subtitle text, two call-to-action buttons (one filled, one outline), and a wide showcase image. Designed as the opening section of the homepage.
  • Hero Cover with Title and Button — A cover-image section with overlay text and a call-to-action button. Use this for impactful page openers where imagery is central.
  • Hero with Feature Boxes — A centered heading and description followed by three feature columns, each with its own heading, description, and "Learn more" button on an alternate background. Good for landing pages that need to highlight key benefits.

Content and Service Sections

  • Columns with Icons — A multi-column layout where each column features an icon, heading, and description. Useful for highlighting features or services at a glance.
  • Columns with Icons and Buttons — Similar to Columns with Icons but each column also includes a call-to-action button. Use this when each feature or service needs its own link.
  • Content Boxes with Buttons — Card-style content boxes with headings, descriptions, and buttons. Suitable for showcasing product categories or service tiers.
  • Content with Image and Button — A side-by-side layout pairing text content with an image and a call-to-action button. Good for feature spotlights or about sections.
  • Service Cards with Buttons — Two-column service cards, each with an image, heading, description, and button on a light background. Designed for listing professional services or offerings.

Pricing and Testimonials

  • Boxed Pricing Plans — A three-tier pricing table (Starter, Pro, Expert) with feature lists and call-to-action buttons per tier. Includes a money-back guarantee footer. Ideal for SaaS, agency, or subscription-based sites.
  • Testimonials — A two-column testimonial layout with client quotes and attribution on a dark inverted background. Use this to build trust with social proof.

Media and Posts

  • Gallery with Title — A heading and description followed by a five-image gallery grid (three columns) on a dark background. Suited for portfolio showcases, event galleries, or product collections.
  • Posts Section — A "Read these Posts" heading followed by a three-post query grid showing featured images, titles, and dates. Use this on non-blog pages to surface recent content. If no posts exist, a fallback message is displayed.

Call to Action

  • Call to Action (Inverted) — A full-width section with the Accent color as the background, a large heading, description text, and an outline "Learn more" button. Designed to draw attention and encourage a specific action such as signing up or getting in touch.

Site Editor — Navigation

Menus in Fork are managed as Navigation blocks within the Site Editor, not through the classic Appearance > Menus screen. The header template part contains a Navigation block pre-populated with links to Home, Patterns, Blog, and Contact.

To edit the navigation, open the Site Editor, click on the header area, and select the Navigation block. From there you can add, remove, reorder, or nest menu items. You can also create multiple Navigation blocks if you add new header variations.

The header also includes a Social Links block with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter icon links. You can edit these to point to your own profiles or remove them entirely.

When the theme is first activated with starter content enabled, it creates a primary navigation menu with Home and Blog links and sets up a static homepage and a blog page.

Otter Blocks Integration

This section applies only when the Otter Blocks plugin is installed and active.

When Otter Blocks is active, the theme unlocks an onboarding experience that provides additional ready-made page templates and layouts through the Otter onboarding flow. If Otter Blocks is not installed, the theme displays a notice in the WordPress dashboard recommending its installation.

A separate plugin, FSE Design Pack, is also promoted through an editor notice. When installed, it adds over 40 additional layout patterns to the block inserter. This notice can be dismissed and does not appear again once closed.
