Agency guide: transfer license responsibility to a client

If you built a website for a client and now want them to manage future renewals, this guide shows the safest handoff flow. You can switch the active license on the existing website without reinstalling the product.

πŸ“ Info: This guide is for agencies, freelancers, and developers who built a client website and now need the client to own billing.

License and account rules you should know first

  • Themeisle accounts are individual customer accounts. Do not share account login access with clients.
  • License keys for Personal, Business, and Developer packages are for your own usage.
  • Agency package licenses can be used on websites you build for clients.
  • Do not sell, assign, or share account ownership or license ownership between different people.

If ownership should move to a different person, use a separate account owned by that client.

Before you replace the license key

  1. Back up the website.
  2. Confirm the site is currently working as expected.
  3. Ask the client to buy the product under their own Themeisle account and copy their license key from Purchase History.
  4. Keep your current license key available until the new key is active.

Activate the client license on the existing website

  1. Open the website's WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to the product's license screen and deactivate the current key if the interface asks you to.
  3. Paste the client's license key and click Activate.
  4. Confirm the license status shows as active.

If you need product-specific license screen paths, use How to activate my license key and the dedicated product links listed there.

What does not change after key replacement

Replacing the active license key does not reinstall the theme or plugin. Your existing website content, design settings, and customizations stay on the site.

Clean up the original subscription separately

Changing the key on the site does not automatically cancel or transfer your original subscription. After the client key is active:

  1. Review your license usage in How to manage your website licenses.
  2. If your old subscription is no longer needed, cancel it with How to cancel my subscription.

Verify the handoff worked

Check these items:

  • The client key shows as active on the website.
  • The client can see the product in their own Themeisle account.
  • The website still looks and works the same.
