Best practices for image uploads for designers and editors

Purpose

This document explains how designers and editors can optimize images effectively using Robin Image Optimizer. Following these practices ensures high visual quality, faster loading pages, and consistent results across all devices, while taking full advantage of unlimited image optimization, WebP, and AVIF conversion.

  • Upload High Quality Source Images

Robin Image Optimizer works best when the original upload is clean and intentional.

Upload images that are large enough for their largest intended use, but avoid extremely large camera originals unless necessary. For most use cases, 2000 pixels on the longest side is more than sufficient. Robin will handle the compression for it.

  • Automatic Compression and Optimization

Once uploaded, Robin automatically compresses images to reduce file size without visible quality loss.

There are no limits on the number of images you can optimize. Existing images in your media library can also be optimized in bulk, ensuring consistent performance across older and newer content.

  • WebP and AVIF Conversion

Robin Image Optimizer provides the options to generate modern image formats such as WebP and AVIF.

These formats provide significantly smaller file sizes compared to JPEG and PNG while maintaining visual quality. Supported browsers will receive WebP or AVIF automatically, while unsupported browsers fall back safely to the original format.

  • Preserve Aspect Ratio and Avoid Cropping

Robin does not crop images by default.

Images are resized proportionally to fit their containers, ensuring that no important parts of the image are cut off. If specific framing is required, crop the image intentionally before uploading it.

  • Enable Lazy Loading

You can Enable Lazy Load by using our second plugin named Super Page Cache to get the best performance benefits.

Lazy loading ensures images are only loaded when they are about to appear on screen. It also allows to serve the most appropriate image size based on how the image is rendered in the layout.

  • Preview and Validate

After optimization, always preview your pages on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Check that images load quickly, remain sharp, and fit correctly within the layout. Robin handles optimization automatically on upload, but visual review ensures design intent is preserved.

Summary

With Robin Image Optimizer, image optimization is automatic and unlimited. Upload clean, high quality images once, and let Robin handle compression, and WebP and AVIF delivery. This results in faster sites, better user experience, and minimal ongoing effort.
